The Dangers of Termites in the Home

Termites eat wood and threaten the structural integrity of your home. These pests can be hard to detect. Learn how to spot signs of termites at home so you can take action before they cause costly damage to your house.

Signs of Termites Include Frass

One of the telltale signs of termites in the home is the appearance of their droppings, or “frass.” It looks like tiny pellets and the piles are similar to sawdust. Subterranean termites use this matter to construct elaborate tunnels, however, drywood termites do not. Instead, they nest within the wood and push the frass out of tiny holes.

Like other insects, termites go through different life cycles. For termites, one of these stages involves growing wings. The job of these winged termites is to find a place suitable for a new colony. When they mate and settle into a new home, those termites shed their wings.

If you see tiny discarded insect wings in your home, this is one of the signs of termites. Have your house inspected immediately.

Mud Tubes

Subterranean termites dig underground and use mud tubes to move from the soil to their food source, your home. If you see these narrow tunnels on or around your home’s foundation, this is an indication you are dealing with an infestation.

Hollow Wood

One of the reasons termites are so hard to detect is because they eat wood from the inside out. If you notice other signs in your home, you can try to determine if a piece of wood has been damaged by termites by tapping on it with your fist. If the wood sounds oddly hollow, you may have termites.

Other Signs of Termites

There are other signs you should look for if you suspect you may have a termite infestation, including hearing clicking sounds from inside the walls. These noises are termites communicating with each other. You may notice bubbling paint, which is caused by the moisture created by termites.

If you detect any of the signs outlined above, call a professional to have your home inspected. You’ll need to take action immediately to address the infestation before it worsens.
